Britain's branded restaurant market is forecast to grow 3% this year. The top three brands are growing up to fifteen times faster*.
None of them are the cheapest or the biggest.
Forecast turnover growth for 2026 puts Maki & Ramen at 45.9%, Afrikana at 31.2% and Hickory's Smokehouse at 24.2%. The branded market around them grows 3%. Independents are forecast to shrink 0.5%.
All three are expansion-led concepts under 40 sites. That makes the arithmetic easier, but it does not explain the gap. Plenty of small chains are opening sites this year and not growing at this rate.
To understand how each is positioned, we apply the 3 C's analysis: Customer, Category, Company.
|
Maki & Ramen+45.9% · 20 sites Identified Positioning: Craft ramen, everyday price. |
| Customer | The young diner who wants authentic Japanese food and cannot routinely pay restaurant prices for it. |
| Category | Split between independents with credibility and chains with consistency, and very little in between. |
| Company | Maki & Ramen's answer sits in the supply chain: an eight-hour broth produced in its own Edinburgh factory. That is what lets it hold the quality claim at the price point, and it is the part a competitor cannot copy by rewriting a menu. |
|
Afrikana+31.2% · 18 sites Identified Positioning: African culture on the high street. |
| Customer | Young halal diners that mainstream casual dining has largely overlooked. |
| Category | Peri-grill, a category that has been defined by a single incumbent for two decades. The brand does not compete with that incumbent on chicken. It competes on cultural specificity, which the incumbent cannot claim. |
| Company | The enabler: a franchise model in four formats, from kiosk to XL, which lets it take sites the big estates cannot make work. |
|
Hickory's Smokehouse+24.2% · 38 sites Identified Positioning: A meal out that's a day out. |
| Customer | Families who need the children entertained as much as fed. |
| Category | Most American barbecue operators sell food. Hickory's sells an afternoon. It is a category shift disguised as a menu. |
| Company | It has quietly changed what it is selling to do it: cinema rooms, play areas, and a Missouri smoker at every site. The smoker is the credibility, the play areas are the reason to drive past three closer options. |
How clear is your positioning?
The brands growing fastest can say exactly who their customer is, what category they are competing in, and what their company does that others cannot copy. If you'd like an outside reading of your brand positioning, we'd be glad to give one.
